GRAPHIC NOVELS

Graphic novels are distinguished from common, ordinary comic books by their format (they are usually published in book form, with higher production values, rather than as pamphlets like most comics) and by the fact that they usually contain longer, more complex stories like what you would find in a novel (hence, the name).

INKING AND COLORING

The role of the inker/colorist is fairly self-explanatory, but generally my job is to ink and color the penciled illustrations of the comic or graphic novel. The colorist will often make the ultimate decision over palette (color scheme), adding to the tone of the book. “Muted”, “Pastel” and “Technicolor” color schemes can change the whole tone and feel of a comic, and is a key part in comics production, despite being arguably the most over-looked artistic role.

Inking includes the black and white “inking” of lines and details, as well as filling in black shadows and details.

Coloring can be either done in gray scale or in full color.

Inking B/W= $20 page Coloring gray scale = $25 page Coloring full RGB/CYMK = starting at $35 page

PENCILING

Illustration of the graphic novels = starting at $35 page

LETTERING

The role of the letterer is to place word balloons and captions on the finished artwork and fill them with words based on the script of the graphic novel or comic. $8-$12 page

HOW IT’S DONE

All of my work is done digitally, using the most recent versions of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Once the image has been inked and/or colored, the pages are dropped into formatted and numbered pages in InDesign where the lettering is completed.

The more involved you are with the process (supplying notes, research, outlines, and feedback) the less time I spend, meaning more savings to you.
